Romania launches RO Wallet website ahead of digital identity wallet rollout

1 septembrie 2026

Romania’s Ministry of Internal Affairs announced today, September 1, 2026, the launch of the RO Wallet website and the technical documentation for the project. The future digital identity wallet will allow users to store a range of important documents on their smartphones, from identity cards and driving licences to diplomas, and access them whenever needed.

However, the project is still under development, with the official launch scheduled for January 2027.

As of today, the following are publicly available:
🌐 The official project website: https://rowallet.gov.ro/
💻 The technical documentation on GitHub: https://lnkd.in/emEXBYg2

The documentation will always be published openly because an ecosystem like this is built in the open. Institutions, companies and developers can review the specifications, integrate services on the same common European foundation, and contribute to a public, verifiable standard.

According to the project roadmap, the rollout will take place in four stages:

August 31, 2026 – Stage 1

The project’s GitHub repositories and public documentation become available, alongside the RO Wallet website. This stage also establishes the application’s interface and overall user experience.

October 31, 2026 – Stage 2

A test version of RO Wallet will be made available. The Interoperability Testing Platform (ITB) and sandbox environment will also be launched, enabling interoperability and cross-border testing.

December 22, 2026 – Stage 3

RO Wallet v1 (MVP) is expected to receive certification, followed by a beta launch for a limited group of users, including family members, close contacts and selected participants.

January 14, 2027 – Stage 4

RO Wallet v1 is scheduled for its official launch.

This is a huge step in building Romania’s digital infrastructure. RO Wallet is the national implementation of the European Digital Identity Wallet (EU Digital Identity Wallet), but its value goes well beyond identity. The principle at the core of the project is clear: the citizen stays in control, at the center of the ecosystem. Data remains on the user’s device, only what’s strictly necessary is shared, always with explicit consent, no tracking, no profiling.” – said Viky Manaila, Trust Services Director at Intesi Group S.p.A.

The project is very much a work in progress. We’re building it step by step, with security and data protection designed in from the start, moving at the same pace as other member states. New features and use cases will follow, from public and financial services to education, healthcare and travel.” – Manaila added.

How RO Wallet Works

In four simple steps, you can manage your documents and present them securely. Once it is set up, you can use it whenever you need to prove something about yourself — either online or in person.

Step 1 – Download the app

Install the official RO Wallet app on your phone as soon as it becomes available. The app is free and official, and will be available in app stores, published by the wallet provider.

Step 2 – Verify your identity

You confirm your identity once through a secure enrolment process using your electronic identity card. This is the only time you need to complete this step. Once enrolled, your digital identity is ready to use.

Step 3 – Add your documents

You can add your identity card, driving licence, diplomas and other digital documents directly from the institutions that issue them. You choose which documents to add and when — nothing is added to your wallet without your consent.

Step 4 – Share only what is necessary

Whenever your information is requested, you decide what to disclose, either in person or online, with your consent. For example, you can prove that you are over 18 or that you are a pensioner without revealing your date of birth. The service receives a verifiable “yes” or “no” response, but not the other information contained in your document. This allows you to prove what is required without revealing more personal information than necessary.
