Bunq clients make card payments to help the bank plant trees. This gives every bunq user the chance to be CO2 free in less than 2-years!

3 aprilie 2020

Users of Dutch digital bank Bunq have spent enough on their Green Cards to plant 100,000 trees in the last four months.

Bunq launched its metal Green Card in November, designed to help users offset their carbon footprint as they spend. For every $100 a user spends, Bunq plants a tree on their behalf in conjunction with Eden Reforestation Project.

The program was so well received that 81% of the Dutch challenger’s online community have pushed for a ‘SuperGreen’ commitment to plant trees for every EUR100 spent with any bunq card.

Therefore, the bank complied with the clients’ wishes: „SuperGreen members can now plant a tree for every € 100 spent, from any card! We ran the numbers (of course we did 😀): that’s approximately 50% more trees than before! Together, we’re looking to plant at least half a million trees before the end of the year!

Acting on the community feedback, bunq announced a SuperGreen subscription where Premium and Business users can upgrade their subscription to plant trees for every card payment made. Users will also be able to track the number of trees they planted in real-time on the bunq app.

„The new SuperGreen subscription increases the number of trees you plant by 50% and it gives every bunq user the chance to be CO2 free in less than 2-years! bunq is currently the only bank in the world that can offer you this option, with absolutely no extra effort from your side.”, the bank said.

“The success of bunq Green Card has been enormous,” Ali Niknam (founder and CEO bunq) notes, adding that the trees planted as a success of bunq’s Green Card, represents “a CO2 reduction of 30.8 million kg, the equivalent of 32,560 flights from Paris to New York.”

The trees planted by bunq in partnership with Eden Reforestation capture 308 kg of CO2 over their lifetime, meaning users will offset their yearly carbon footprint.

Bunq is currently available in 30 European markets.
