BNPL solutions currently account for around 4% of Romania’s e-commerce transaction volume, with the share potentially doubling within three years, according to PayPo

1 octombrie 2026

PayPo, a leading Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) provider in Central and Eastern Europe, has reached 300,000 users and more than 1,100 Romanian merchants, four years after entering the Romanian market. The company’s growth comes amid increasing adoption of BNPL solutions, which currently account for approximately 4% of total e-commerce transaction volume in Romania, according to PayPo estimates.

The company expects this share to potentially double over the next three years, driven by increasing adoption among both consumers and merchants. In mature markets, the BNPL segment is estimated to grow at an average annual rate of around 20% in the coming years, while the Romanian market could develop at a faster pace, according to the company’s press release.

In the first eight months of 2026, PayPo processed approximately 915,000 transactions, worth around RON 290 million.

Romania was the first market PayPo entered outside Poland, as the company began its regional expansion in 2022. During its four years of local operations, the number of users has increased approximately 12-fold, while its merchant network surpassed the 1,000 mark at the end of July 2026. More than 60% of the merchants in the network have been integrated over the past two years, as Buy Now, Pay Later solutions have become increasingly familiar in the local market.

The growth in PayPo’s user base has also translated into increased frequency of use. On average, a PayPo customer has completed six transactions over the period in which they have used the service. At the same time, the average transaction value has reached approximately RON 300, up 22% compared with the level recorded when the company first launched in the Romanian market.

“Over four years of activity in Romania, we have moved from adapting a product to the needs of Romanian consumers to building a local ecosystem with hundreds of thousands of users. The dynamics we are currently seeing — in terms of users, transactions and order values — point to the growing adoption of BNPL solutions. For us, the next stage is to make this form of payment relevant across as many purchasing contexts as possible and to develop increasingly flexible experiences for consumers and merchants,” said Raul Durma, General Manager of PayPo Romania.

Fashion is currently the category generating the highest number of PayPo transactions in Romania, followed by footwear, beauty, children’s products and pet shops. In terms of payment options, installment payments currently account for approximately 25–30% of total PayPo usage, with consumer preference for this option continuing to grow.

PayPo’s development in Romania has also been accompanied by an expansion of the functionalities available to users. Following the initial adaptation of the product to the specific characteristics of the local market, the company launched its mobile app, allowing users to manage their shopping limit, payments and purchases made through PayPo. Most recently, the company introduced an installment payment option, further expanding the range of solutions available to consumers.

“We continue to see significant room for BNPL to grow in Romania. The coming years will primarily involve expanding adoption among merchants and consumers, including in categories that are currently less represented. At the same time, we expect payment options to diversify and an omnichannel experience to develop, allowing consumers to use BNPL across different purchasing contexts. Integration with virtual cards is also one of the directions we see shaping the evolution of BNPL services,” added Raul Durma.

PayPo is a leading Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) provider in Central and Eastern Europe. With more than 66,000 merchant partners, the company boasts one of the highest Net Promoter Scores (NPS) in the market. Founded in Poland in 2017, PayPo provides a secure and seamless payment experience to more than 2.5 million users.

The company also enables BNPL services to be integrated into offline channels through a partnership with an international card payment provider, delivering a seamless shopping experience both online and in physical stores.

Romania was the first market PayPo entered after Poland, with the company launching its operations in the country in 2022.
