Romania’s leading payment platform is expanding beyond payment processing, laying the foundation for a broader financial services ecosystem for merchants and consumers across Central and Eastern Europe.
NETOPIA Payments has entered a new phase of strategic development following the National Bank of Romania’s (BNR) approval to expand its payment institution license to include money remittance services.
The regulatory approval marks an important milestone in NETOPIA’s evolution and strengthens its position as one of the few platforms in Romania with fully licensed capabilities spanning both payment acceptance and money remittance under a single technology infrastructure.
For NETOPIA, the move represents more than an expansion of its regulatory scope. It is a key building block in the company’s broader strategy to evolve from a payments provider into a comprehensive financial technology platform.
Building a Financial Infrastructure for Central and Eastern Europe
NETOPIA currently processes more than RON 10 billion in transactions annually and serves a community of more than 25,000 merchants. Building on this scale, the company is expanding its offering beyond traditional online payment processing, with the ambition of creating a financial operating platform for Central and Eastern Europe.
The long-term vision is to bring payments, financial data, and complementary financial services together through a unified technology infrastructure, enabling businesses to manage an increasingly broad range of financial needs through a single platform.
Expanding into New Financial Services
The addition of money remittance services is part of a broader product diversification strategy that includes several new directions.
Money Remittance Services – The new capability opens the door to additional payment services, products, and strategic partnerships across new business verticals, while strengthening NETOPIA’s position within the broader financial services ecosystem.
Account-to-Account Payments through RoPay – NETOPIA is also expanding its payment acceptance capabilities through Account-to-Account (A2A) payments via RoPay. The solution provides merchants with an alternative to traditional card-based payments, enabling fast and efficient payment collection through instant account-to-account transfers.
Embedded Finance and Merchant Cash Advance – Another key area of development is embedded finance. Through partnerships, NETOPIA plans to expand access to flexible financing solutions such as Merchant Cash Advance, helping entrepreneurs improve cash-flow management, fund their operations, and support business growth.
Together, these initiatives point to a broader shift in NETOPIA’s business model: from processing transactions to providing the financial infrastructure and services that businesses need to operate and grow.
“Obtaining the license from the National Bank of Romania validates the high standards we have set for security and compliance. More importantly, however, it provides the foundation for the next chapter of NETOPIA’s development,” said Raluca Micu, CEO of NETOPIA.
“Our vision is to become a comprehensive growth partner for entrepreneurs in Romania. Through our new embedded finance solutions and upcoming integrated platform, we aim to provide merchants not only with payment technology, but with the tools they need to scale their businesses, optimize cash flow, and improve operational efficiency.”
Moving Toward a One-Stop-Shop for Merchants
At the heart of NETOPIA’s strategy is the development of a unified platform designed to bring multiple financial capabilities together. Over the medium term, the platform is expected to integrate multiple payment methods, rapid fund collection, automated transaction reconciliation, and complementary financial services.
For NETOPIA’s more than 25,000 merchants, this evolution could significantly simplify the way they manage their day-to-day financial operations.
The benefits include:
. Unified payment and reconciliation capabilities, reducing the complexity of managing multiple financial systems.
. Broader payment acceptance options, ranging from cards and cash to instant A2A payments.
. Greater operational efficiency, with increased automation reducing the administrative burden associated with daily financial processes.
. Access to complementary financial services, creating additional opportunities to support working capital and business growth.
The objective is to create a genuine one-stop-shop for merchants, where payments, reconciliation, financing, and other financial services can be accessed through a single technological ecosystem.
Security, Compliance and Infrastructure Remain Core Priorities
The expansion of NETOPIA’s product portfolio is being accompanied by continued investment in the infrastructure supporting the platform. The company is strengthening transaction security and resilience while further automating compliance and reporting processes.
NETOPIA is also deepening its integration with banking infrastructure and continuing to invest in fraud prevention capabilities. These investments are increasingly important as the company expands from payment processing into a broader range of regulated financial services.
From Payments Provider to Financial Platform
NETOPIA’s latest move reflects a broader trend across the global fintech industry: payments are increasingly becoming the entry point into a much broader range of financial services.
For NETOPIA, the opportunity lies in leveraging its existing merchant base, transaction volumes, technology infrastructure, and regulatory capabilities to build a more comprehensive financial platform. The expansion of its BNR license to include money remittance services is therefore significant not only because of the new service itself, but because it provides another building block for the company’s longer-term strategy.
The direction is clear: NETOPIA is moving beyond payment processing toward an integrated financial infrastructure designed to help businesses collect payments, manage cash flow, access financing, and streamline their financial operations through a single platform.
If successfully executed, this strategy could position NETOPIA as a significant fintech infrastructure player not only in Romania, but potentially across the broader Central and Eastern European market.
