Agentic commerce: 120 billion transactions by 2031 globally, as B2B agentic use accelerates by 19,000%

25 august 2026

new study by global tech strategists Juniper Research has found that the number of agentic commerce transactions globally across B2B and B2C use cases will reach 120 billion annually by 2031; up from around 620 million in 2026.

This extraordinary growth of over 19,000% reflects the emergence of agentic commerce as a genuine mainstream market. Agentic commerce is where AI agents autonomously make purchase decisions and eCommerce transactions on a user’s behalf.

While most pilot projects have been within B2C eCommerce, the B2B market has strong potential. B2B purchases are already heavily structured via platforms such as corporate travel management systems or procure-to-pay solutions. As such, agentic commerce can achieve maximum impact in B2B by targeting a finite number of B2B platforms, rather than a near-infinite number of eCommerce merchants.

Auditability & Explainability Vital to B2B Success

While the report identified B2B agentic commerce as being a major opportunity, it cautioned that auditability and explainability of purchase decisions as vital to success. The research recommends that agentic platforms focus on identifying clear intent from the human user, as well as integrating spend limits and controls from corporate expense policies to best address the B2B opportunity.

VP of Research Nick Maynard commented: “Businesses are going all-in on AI systems to boost efficiency, and procurement will be the next area to be impacted by AI tools. However, to succeed, AI systems must be able to adhere to the rigid constraints of procurement processes, or businesses will quickly lose confidence.
