UnionPay International has announced that it plans to launch its mobile payment service, QuickPass, in Switzerland.

With the holding of the Winter Davos Forum in Switzerland, the local travel payment environment has attracted the attention of many tourists. So far, all the ATM terminals and 90% of POS terminals in Switzerland accept UnionPay cards, and it is expected that the UnionPay will reach 100% acceptance next year, UnionPay said in a press release.

According to the Davos Tourism Bureau, the number of Chinese tourists to Switzerland has increased by about 30% each year in the past five years, making them the fastest-growing international tourists. In answer to this, UnionPay International continues to improve its acceptance in Switzerland.

Switzerland Travel Centre, the country’s largest tour operator, projects that within the next three years the share of tourists coming from China will increase to 20 percent. In an exclusive interview with CNNMoney Switzerland, CEO Michael Maeder says, “We are getting 10 percent of the share from China this year, but we do expect it to grow.”

CEO of UnionPay International, Cai Jianbo, who is attending the Davos Forum in Switzerland, said that UnionPay International has been improving its acceptance in Europe over the past few years. UnionPay’s acceptance coverage in Europe has exceeded 60%, providing convenient payment services for tourists. In answer to the new payment demands of free-and-independent travelers, UnionPay International will continue to carry out extensive collaboration with European institutions to further enhance its acceptance in key fields related to independent traveling and improve the service capability of the UnionPay network.

QuickPass, UnionPay’s contactless payment solution, is accepted at over 12 million POS terminals worldwide with 2 million of those outside China across 35 countries.

While the majority of transactions made by Chinese visitors to Switzerland relate to watches and jewellery, UnionPay is seeing an increasing proportion come from department stores, supermarkets, transportation, and petrol stations.

In Europe, UnionPay is accepted at over 3.3 million merchants in 40 countries and regions, covering more than 60% of all the bankcard-accepting merchants. Its global network has extended to 174 countries and regions, which covers 52 million merchants and 2.6 million ATMs worldwide.
