From March 17, 2025, Tisséo allowed Toulousains to pay their bus, metro, tram and cable car in crypto.
Toulouse has become the first city in Europe to introduce cryptocurrency payments for public transport. The initiative, launched by Tisséo, the public transit operator, allows passengers to purchase tickets using various cryptocurrencies through an online payment platform.
The service enables travellers to buy single tickets and multi-ride passes with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other supported digital currencies. Payments are processed through a third-party provider, which immediately converts the cryptocurrency into euros, ensuring that Tisséo receives the exact fare amount without exposure to market volatility.
The initiative aligns with the growing acceptance of digital assets across France. A 2024 Gemini study found that nearly one in five French residents held cryptocurrency.
“That figure may rise to 30 percent in the next two to three years, so to stay ahead and modernise, we are introducing this payment method,” said Sacha Briand – Head of Finance at Tisséo. “Like the rechargeable ticket we are launching in the coming days, this is another step to diversify our payment options.”
