The new wearables: ‘tattoo’ payments

21 aprilie 2016

Forget cards, mobiles and even smartwatches. A healthcare technology startup is hoping that we will soon be attaching ultra-thin tattoo-like stickers that can make contactless payments to our bodies. MC10’s Wearable Interactive Stamp Platform (WiSP) is a breathable, waterproof stamp that uses NFC technology to pair with smartphones and NFC readers. When removed it tears, making stored information unreadable.

The technology can be used in clinical environments to transmit important patient information but MC10 is hoping to move beyond the healthcare world.

„When paired with a smartphone, tablet, or near field communication (NFC) reader, the WiSP platform enables a variety of consumer applications, such as cashless payments, hotel room access, event registration, interactive experiences at amusement parks, sporting and music events and VIP experiences. The WiSP platform can also be used in clinical environments to transmit important patient information and streamline procedure flow.”, according to the press release.

L’Oréal has already tapped the technology to measure individual UV exposure and now MC10 has enlisted PCH to find brands in other arenas. The partners say that WiSP could enable cashless payments, as well as hotel room access, event registration and interactive experiences at amusement parks, sporting and music events.

PCH Founder and CEO Liam Casey said, “Our partnership with MC10 opens the door for other brands to develop consumer applications using this unique wearable platform. The stamp is highly customizable allowing brands to create personalized and engaging experiences that reinforce customer loyalty.”

The stamp leverages NFC technology to enable a variety of interactions between brand and wearer. By combining cloud analytics with the WiSP platform, brands can deepen their understanding of consumer behavior. To maintain the security of the stored information, the breathable, waterproof stamp is designed to tear and become unreadable upon removal.

Contactless payments stickers have been around for years, although they have been rather more clunky and designed for attachment to phones rather than people.

Scott Pomerantz, CEO, MC10, says: „PCH’s experience working with leading consumer brands, and their ability to commercialize the technology, will accelerate development of new applications within a variety of industries for skin-worn wearables.”
