Russia tries to replace Apple Pay and Google Pay. Gazprombank launches GazpromPay payment service.

21 martie 2022

At first, journalists noticed that the bank had filed applications for two trademarks, Gpay and GazpromPAY. This happened on March 1, 2022, according to the registry of Rospatent. Then Gazprombank explained that the signs are needed for the GazpromPay wallet. It will allow you to link any bank cards and pay with them in online stores.

A number of Russian banks and their cards have been frozen out of digital payment platforms such as Apple Pay and Google Pay in line with Western-led sanctions. But banks are responding with a number of solutions, including a new service from Gazprombank, the banking branch of the state-controlled energy giant Gazprom.

Per a press release, the bank has unveiled a solution named the GazpromPay wallet, which should go online on March 22.  The bank said that the wallet will allow users to make “quick, convenient, and safe” payments from any bank card when using online stores.

This is the first payment wallet in Russia, in which customers can not only link their existing bank cards, but also instantly issue and replenish a virtual card in order to securely make purchases in online stores with a profitable cashback. The service is available on any smartphones and devices.

„To use it, you do not need to download a separate application to your smartphone. It is enough to select payment via GazpromPay on the payment page for purchases in the online store, go through a simple registration and link existing bank cards of any bank once or issue a virtual Gazprombank Ogon card with a cashback of up to 5%. For subsequent purchases through the GazpromPay wallet, you only need to confirm the transaction, without wasting time entering card details,” the bank explains.

The GazpromPay wallet is a continuation of Gazprombank’s line of digital products and services for e-commerce.

“GazpromPay is a modern, innovative Russian payment service that fully meets all the requirements of the time, allowing you to make payments on the websites of online stores without hindrance. There is no doubt that it will be in demand, because the wallet has a balance between security, simplicity and speed of payment transactions,” commented Sergey Kupriyanov, press secretary of the Gazprom Management Committee Chairman.

“In recent years, Gazprombank has been one of the most active participants in the process of digitalization of the Russian financial sector, including the progressive development of a wide range of modern remote services for the convenience of its retail and corporate clients. The launch of the GazpromPay payment wallet is the most important stage in this process, and the need to invest in the development of such services in Russia today has acquired particular relevance.”– said Dmitry Zauers, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Gazprombank.

The GazpromPay wallet is already working on the websites of a number of online stores — Gazprombank’s partners. The immediate plans of the service team and Gazprombank include a significant expansion of the list of partners of online stores, as well as expanding the functionality of the service.
