MoonPay introduced a native ChatGPT app that enables direct cryptocurrency purchases within chatbot conversations

MoonPay has launched a new ChatGPT integration that allows users to buy cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, and USDC directly through OpenAI’s chatbot interface.

MoonPay launched a dedicated app in ChatGPT Apps, allowing users to buy cryptocurrencies directly inside OpenAI’s chatbot. 

The integration is available to eligible ChatGPT users and works through conversational prompts. Users can ask ChatGPT about a cryptocurrency and request to buy a certain amount. The chatbot then generates a MoonPay checkout link that redirects users to complete the transaction securely.

„The launch marks one of the first major crypto payment integrations directly inside an AI chatbot platform. Unlike other crypto focused ChatGPT apps such as Kraken, OKX, CryptoAudit, and RealOpen, which mainly provide blockchain data and price tracking, MoonPay’s app allows users to complete actual crypto purchases.” – according to coinlaw.io.

The purchase process is designed to be familiar for users. After ChatGPT generates the MoonPay payment link, customers are redirected to MoonPay’s platform to complete identity verification and connect their crypto wallet.

New users are required to complete the standard Know Your Customer (KYC) process before making a purchase. Existing MoonPay customers can sign in with their accounts and use previously saved payment methods for faster checkout.

“We’ve seen this with commerce and AI, where a lot of people get shopping recommendations within ChatGPT,” MoonPay Blockchain Engineer and Product Lead Kevin Arifin told Decrypt. “Now people are starting to do financial research within ChatGPT as well, and it’s always been surprising to me that there hasn’t been an on-ramp where you could buy crypto within ChatGPT.”

In the app, users can ask ChatGPT about their favorite cryptocurrency and then ask the chatbot to buy a specified amount. ChatGPT will generate a MoonPay checkout link that takes the user to the MoonPay website to go through the Know-Your-Customer (KYC) process and link their wallet.

“It’s like a broker that sits by you, not making financial recommendations, but educating you about the asset you’re buying. [It] makes ChatGPT the perfect place for that,” Arifin said. “Right now, this is just giving you the buy link to check out, similar to Shopify, but longer-term we’re going to see ChatGPT or these types of LLMs take more actions instead of just giving you that checkout link.”
