MasterCard is giving a boost to Apple Pay adoption in the UK by offering free public transport rides across the capital for commuters who tap to pay with their iPhone. The „Fare Free Mondays” promotion is available on 23 November, 30 November, 7 December and 14 December across all forms of London public transport. For those who touch in and out with their Apple device on each successive Monday their fares will be refunded by MasterCard to a cap of £27.90 on any of the days.
The promotion will serve to build awareness of paying for Transport for London (TfL) through Apple Pay. According to TfL, over one million journeys are now paid for through contactless every day and now make up nearly 25 percent of pay as you go journeys. Since Transport for London began enabling people to pay for journeys with contactless, the organisation has become the fastest growing contactless MasterCard and American Express merchant in the UK, according to finextra.
Mark Barnett, president of MasterCard UK&I said: „The move by TfL last year to accept contactless cards and devices on London Underground has been a phenomenal catalyst to the growth in contactless payments across the UK. Now that Apple Pay has arrived we want to encourage travellers on London’s transport network to try it out and give them another convenient option to pay for their travel.”
