Banks had said the European payment app would be available by the end of June, but launch date is now 1 September
According to the Luxembourg Times, the European payments app Wero will officially launch in Luxembourg on 1 September, later than the timeline outlined by participating banks in March, when they said four banks would be ready to offer the solution to customers by the end of June.
In a joint statement issued in March, BGL BNP Paribas, BIL, Raiffeisen and Spuerkeess said they would be “ready by the end of June 2026 to offer the Wero app to their respective clients”. Post Luxembourg was expected to follow “by mid-August 2026 at the earliest”.
However, none of the participating banks have launched Wero so far. The banks did not respond to a request for comment from the Luxembourg Times.
The European Payments Initiative (EPI), which operates Wero, said 1 September would now be the official market launch date for Luxembourg. The organisation said the date was chosen to avoid “the summer holiday period, when media attention, customer engagement and overall visibility are naturally lower.”
“Launching a new payment brand is about much more than technical readiness – it also requires strong customer awareness, coordinated communications and the right market momentum,” EPI said.
EPI added that banks were continuing to follow their own deployment schedules, with some institutions potentially launching before 1 September and others only on the official launch date.
