Lidl Germany lets shoppers pay by SEPA bank transfer

11 februarie 2026

In Germany, Lidl shoppers can now complete purchases by paying directly via SEPA bank transfer through the Lidl Plus app, effectively avoiding reliance on major U.S.-based card networks like Visa and Mastercard, according to recent user reports.

SEPA (the Single Euro Payments Area) — is the uniform payment framework that enables euro-denominated transfers across the EU. With SEPA Instant Credit Transfers now required to be supported by banks and settling within seconds 24/7, consumers can use direct transfers as a viable in-store payment option.

Lidl’s rollout effectively turns a routine bank transfer into a simple checkout method. Shoppers initiate the payment through their bank’s app or interface, and funds move directly from their account to Lidl’s. There are no intermediary card network fees, tokenization pipelines, or foreign processor involvement. While this method may still have a few challenging moments for settlement depending on instant-SEPA availability, it represents a cleaner alternative to cards for many customers.
