Google and PayPal partner for mobile shopping by fingerprint

19 mai 2017

PayPal mobile app Android Pay users that have linked their PayPal accounts will soon be able to pay for goods when mobile shopping using the Chrome browser with just just a touch of their fingerprint.

Last month, PayPal announced an extension of its existing partnership with Google to enable consumers in the US to use PayPal as a payment method in the Android Pay wallet where Android Pay is accepted – in apps and in stores.

„Today, we’re announcing another facet to our partnership. Android Pay users that have linked their PayPal accounts will be able to enjoy a simplified payment experience online at millions of merchants that accept PayPal. The new experience, which featured at Google I/O today, allows Android Pay users on Chrome mobile web to pay at millions of online merchants that accept PayPal using their PayPal account and their fingerprint – without needing to enter in their username or password.”, according to the press release.

This partnership will help speed checkout from Android phones by using Android Pay to seamlessly authenticate users where PayPal is accepted. Similar to PayPal’s deployment of One Touch, merchants on the latest versions of PayPal Checkout will not need to do any integration to take advantage of these new capabilities.

Pali Bhat, VP of Payments Products at Google, addressed the importance of a seamless mobile checkout experience, sharing: “Mobile checkout remains one of the biggest sources of friction in the commerce experience, and we’re excited to collaborate with PayPal on enabling streamlined checkout experiences for all Android Pay and PayPal users.”

„As more and more shopping moves to mobile and as we deliver great mobile customer experiences through our unique two-sided platform of over 200 million users and 16 million merchants, PayPal’s mobile-first strategy is paying off.”, says Bill Ready, COO, PayPal. „

This new seamless way to make a purchase with PayPal on Chrome mobile web with an Android device is just one way PayPal is working to simplify the checkout experience. PayPal’s One Touch is another way, and enables consumers to securely check out across platforms and devices without having to type in any payment information once logged in.

„More than 53 million people globally have opted into PayPal’s One Touch, and the experience is enabled across more than 5 million merchants around the world.”, Ready added.

The PayPal integration with Android Pay is supported on versions of Android OS 4.4 and higher, including KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat. To get started, sign up for PayPal and download the Android Pay app. This new experience and also the ability to tap and pay in stores with Android Pay and PayPal will start rolling out to US consumers soon.

Over the past year, PayPal has been focused on forging strategic partnerships with key players across the industry, from Visa and Mastercard to Google and Facebook.

Meanwhile, Android Pay is set to come to Brazil, Canada, Russia, Spain and Taiwan, while US users will soon be able to receive payments via Google Assistant on Google Home and Android devices.
