Eftpos NZ launches biometric-ready terminals for future face and palm payments

4 august 2026

Eftpos New Zealand has launched Verifone‘s Victa payment platform, bringing biometric-ready payment terminals to the local market ahead of the eventual rollout of face and palm authentication. Victa runs on the platform behind 90,000+ business locations across New Zealand and generates 700 million+ transactions a year. „We’re the preferred terminal supplier for all five merchant acquiring banks in New Zealand.” – according to the company.

Eftpos NZ announced the launch of Victa, a new family of Android-based payment terminals. „The devices accept every way New Zealanders pay today, but are built for where payments are heading next. Victa Portable, the first device in the range, is available now.” – according to the press release.

What is Victa?
Verifone Victa is the culmination of more than four decades of Verifone payments expertise. The first device available from the range – the Victa Portable – runs on Android 13, is certified to PCI PTS 7.x, and is engineered to deliver „exceptional transaction experiences” across every payment type in use in New Zealand today, including tap, chip, swipe, digital wallets, BNPL, and dynamic QR-based payments.

„But Victa goes far beyond simply taking payments. The device can be updated to accept emerging payment methods and extended with third-party apps. Merchants can deploy off-the-shelf integrations for loyalty, digital wallets, and on-device marketing campaigns. Businesses can also build purpose-built apps tailored to their needs, taking advantage of Victa’s hardware capabilities including the built-in barcode scanner and cameras to create fully customised checkout experience.” – the company said.

What makes Victa different from standard EFTPOS
Most EFTPOS terminals run closed, proprietary operating systems. When new payment types emerge, compliance standards shift, or when your business needs something the hardware wasn’t built for, you replace the device. „Victa changes that model. Reliable, high-performance hardware built to the industry’s highest security standards, with the flexibility of a modern Android platform underneath. New capabilities arrive through software, not new hardware. The same device that takes a card payment today can run a POS app, scan a loyalty barcode, or verify a customer’s identity tomorrow.” – the company explained.

„Victa is built for what’s coming. The hardware is ready to support face and palm recognition at the point of sale, enabling cardless payments, seamless loyalty authentication, and age verification without physical ID. The infrastructure to support this functionality is not yet available in New Zealand, but while biometric-enabled payments may be the payments of tomorrow, Victa is ready today.”

Neither Eftpos NZ nor Verifone has said when biometric payments will become available, which banks or wallet providers will participate, or whether biometric matching will occur on the terminal itself or through cloud-based infrastructure.
