Danubius enables merchants to accept QR code payments

5 octombrie 2026

Danubius, a leader in fiscal technology and payment solutions in Romania, announces “a retail first: the integration of RoPay, Romania’s national instant payment system developed by TRANSFOND, directly into Datecs cash registers, including the MX models and the BlueCash range” – according to the press release.

“Through this initiative, the company is transforming more than 100,000 fiscal devices already in use across the market into digital payment acceptance points for QR code payments, without requiring a bank POS terminal or additional investment from merchants.” – the company said.

“The new functionality marks a significant shift in the retail payment experience: payment is no longer a process separate from fiscalization but becomes an integral part of it. Customers simply scan the QR code generated through the RoPay system and printed on the fiscal receipt. The transaction is processed instantly through the RoPay infrastructure, while confirmation is delivered in real time to the cash register, which automatically records the payment and completes the transaction. For retailers, this translates into rapid settlement — within the first 10 seconds after the transaction is completed — and, consequently, more efficient management of incoming payments.” – the company explained.

From Fiscal Compliance to Payment Acceptance Infrastructure

“Integrating RoPay directly into Datecs equipment across the MX and BlueCash ranges is a continuation of Danubius’ strategic direction to transform fiscal technology from a compliance obligation into an active business tool that contributes to operational optimization and more efficient financial processes. At a time when businesses are facing significant financial pressure, our implementation of TRANSFOND’s strategic project allows us to eliminate reliance on bank POS terminals and reduce both settlement times for merchants and the costs associated with these processes. The solution is available through all RoPay partner banks. The result is greater autonomy and improved cash flow management at a time when the speed of capital turnover is becoming increasingly critical for SMEs,” said Velin Ganev, CEO of Danubius.

Following solutions such as BlueCash and MyDude Cloud, the company is taking its innovation-driven vision further by enabling access to digital payments without additional investment, thereby taking an important step towards democratizing electronic payments across Romania’s retail sector.

“Integrating RoPay directly into the existing fiscal infrastructure of any type of physical retail business — from hypermarkets to small rural stores — represents a major step forward for financial inclusion in Romania. It enables us to bring instant payments beyond major urban centers and directly into the heart of local commerce and rural communities. Through this strategic initiative, TRANSFOND is accelerating the digitalization of the economy while fostering healthy competition among banks, providing financial institutions with a democratic and highly scalable channel through which they can deliver additional value to their customers. We congratulate the Danubius team on this remarkable initiative, which is becoming a true catalyst for the expansion of instant payments across Romania,” said Sabin Carantină, General Manager of TRANSFOND.

A Scalable Nationwide Model

The technical approval supplement obtained by Danubius enables the activation of the RoPay functionality without any hardware modifications. This allows the company to leverage Romania’s largest installed base of active cash registers and directly contribute to the nationwide expansion of the instant payment infrastructure. “In practical terms, wherever a Datecs cash register from the aforementioned models is in use, merchants can initiate and accept QR code payments. This approach accelerates the adoption of digital payments in segments where POS terminal penetration remains limited, particularly among independent retailers, HoReCa businesses and local convenience stores. It also supports the broader digitalization of the economy by providing an accessible solution that is simple to implement.” – Danubius said.

Instant Payments Become the Operational Standard

Unlike traditional physical card payments, where settlement to the merchant can take one or two days, RoPay enables funds to be transferred to the merchant’s account in less than 10 seconds. This difference is reshaping the way daily financial flows are managed and reduces pressure on cash flow, particularly for SMEs.

At the same time, native integration into the fiscal equipment ensures full transaction traceability and automated compliance, eliminating the operational risks associated with separate systems or manual processes — a direction that Danubius continues to pursue across its entire product portfolio.

A New Standard for Romanian Retail

The launch of RoPay on Datecs cash registers marks an important milestone in the evolution of Romania’s payment ecosystem, transforming fiscal infrastructure into an integrated environment for payment acceptance, reporting and business operations.

Through this initiative, Danubius strengthens its role as a pioneer in fiscal technology and a strategic partner in the digitalization of commerce, contributing to the development of a more efficient, accessible and better-connected system that responds to the real needs of the business community.
