Cross-border credential exchange is possible: Japan, EU validate cross-border digital wallet interoperability. Pilot shows academic credentials can be exchanged across digital wallets.
A pilot that was aimed at testing the technical feasibility of cross-border issuance and verification of academic credentials between Japan and European Union (EU) countries using digital identity wallets has been described as successful.
A new report details the successful EU Japan Interoperability Pilot. „It demonstrated the feasibility of the cross-border exchange of learning credentials between a test European Union Digital Identity Wallet and a Japanese environment built specifically for this pilot project.” – according to the press release.
The project represents a collaborative effort to enhance digital connectivity, and was designed to verify the alignment of the respective technical and governance frameworks and check their capability to support an interoperable environment.
The interoperability pilot supports the Memorandum of Cooperation on Digital Identities and Trust Services signed in April 2024 by both the European Union and the Digital Agency of Japan. It seeks to facilitate data free flow with trust between the two regions.
Testing cross-border education credential issuance and presentation
The interoperability of credentials was tested to confirm that they could be appropriately issued, stored, presented, and verified across different countries and regions. Academic credentials were used as the use case scenario in this pilot project.
The testing was performed within a controlled environment designed to replicate a real-world scenario. The EUDIW prototype was used to interact with issuing and verifying relying parties created by Japan in a sandbox environment, while the Japanese wallet interacted with issuing and verifying relying parties in the EU.
The following presentation scenarios were supported:
- A Japanese student, using a Japanese wallet, presents a learning credential to a European verifier (e.g., a university).
- A European student, using an EUDI wallet, presents a learning credential to a Japanese verifier (e.g., a university).
The following issuance scenarios were supported:
- A Japanese student is issued a learning credential from a European issuer to their Japanese wallet
- A European student is issued a learning credential from a Japanese issuer to their EUDI Wallet
Cross-border credential exchange is possible
The pilot has successfully demonstrated that cross-border digital credential exchange can be achieved using established international standards between countries or regions with different technical and regulatory frameworks. It has shown that the technical framework for secure, privacy-preserving credential presentation and issuance is viable for cross-border scenarios. International interoperability can be ensured through existing architectures, even if parties have different governance frameworks.
