The National Bank of Poland (NBP) has classified the BLIK payment system as a systemically important payment system. The decision, made on September 9, 2026, reflects the growing use of BLIK and its importance to the national payment system. “Data analyzed by NBP indicates that in the last four reporting quarters, BLIK has processed the most payment orders of all retail payment systems in Poland.” – according to the press release.
The National Bank of Poland’s decision marks a change in the current classification of the BLIK payment system. Since 2022, it has been classified as a significant retail payment system. Currently, with the growing number of transactions and the increasing importance of BLIK in the Polish market, the system has been classified as a top-tier system under the supervision of retail payment systems.
The reclassification was based on an analysis of data provided to the National Bank of Poland by payment system operators. It shows that in the last four consecutive reporting quarters, the BLIK payment system has processed the largest number of payment orders among all retail payment systems operating in Poland.
„The National Bank of Poland’s decision confirms the scale BLIK has achieved, but also the effectiveness of the strategy we have consistently implemented for years. From the outset, we have focused on developing a solution that meets real user needs and expands its presence in new areas of everyday payments. Together with banks and partners, we are systematically expanding BLIK’s availability and developing new services. It is this consistency in implementing this strategy that has made BLIK a key element of the Polish payments market. For us, its status as a systemically important payment system is a confirmation of BLIK’s business success, and at the same time, a commitment.” – says Monika Król, vice president of BLIK.
BLIK’s use is steadily growing. In the first half of 2026 alone, users completed 1.6 billion BLIK transactions worth a total of PLN 244.8 billion, translating to an average of 8.7 million transactions per day. By the end of June, the system had 21.6 million active users. BLIK is used in e-commerce and at brick-and-mortar locations, for mobile transfers, cash withdrawals and deposits, and recurring payments. The system is also expanding outside of Poland, with additional functionalities and application areas being developed in collaboration with banks, acquirers, and other payment market participants.
The classification of payment systems is part of the systemic oversight exercised by the President of the National Bank of Poland. Its purpose is to ensure the efficient and secure operation of the Polish payment system infrastructure.
