A Scottish company creates ‘world’s first’ contactless payment jacket

3 septembrie 2015

As the contactless payment limit is being raised to £30, Lyle and Scott has collaborated with Barclaycard and its bPay technology to create a jacket that can be used to make contactless payments.

Scottish knitwear brand Lyle & Scott has begun selling a contactless jacket that comes equipped with Barclaycard bPay technology to enable the wearer to make payments with a tap of the cuff at any contactless terminal. The bPay chip is inserted into the jacket on the right-hand sleeve and is linked to the user’s bPay account.

It is retailing at £150 (US$229) and is available from the Lyle & Scott flagship store on Carnaby Street, London, as well as online in two colours — true black and admiral blue.

“We are proud to partner with bPay to launch the world’s first contactless payment jacket,” says Jonathan Briggs, innovation project manager at Lyle & Scott. “The jacket can be used to pay at any contactless terminal for transactions up to £30, ultimately seizing the next step in satisfying the consumer’s need for flexibility and convenience.”

“This collaboration with Lyle & Scott shows the potential of wearable payments and how they can be customised to fit more conveniently and easily into consumers’ everyday lives,” adds Mike Saunders, managing director of digital consumer payments at Barclaycard. “The combination of the heritage of a brand like Lyle & Scott with the latest payments technology from bPay will further advance contactless payments as being the easiest way and buy everyday things.”

Barclaycard launched its first generation bBay contactless band in June 2014 and introduced its second generation bPay wearable devices earlier this year, including a bPay wristband, fob and sticker.
In 2014, Australia’s Heritage Bank worked with menswear label MJ Bale to create a suit that included an embedded NFC chip and antenna to allow its wearer to make NFC payments at contactless POS terminals by simply swiping their sleeve.
