Effective 10 July, NETOPIA Financial Services has been authorised by the National Bank of Romania (NBR) to operate as a Payment Institution. The authorisation process took approximately 20 months from the submission of the company’s application.
The company has been authorised to provide payment services under category e2), which covers the acquiring of payment transactions (merchant acquiring). Of the 14 payment institutions currently registered with the National Bank of Romania, only five others have been authorised to provide services under category e2): SMITH & SMITH S.R.L. (April 2011), TOKEN PAYMENT SERVICES S.R.L. (October 2024), C-SOLUTION S.R.L. (November 2025), EUROPAYMENT SERVICES S.R.L. (March 2026), and MOBILE DISTRIBUTION S.R.L. (May 2026).
„This is a defining milestone for NETOPIA Payments—and the most challenging, yet rewarding, achievement of my career. Anyone working in the regulated payments industry understands the significance of this accomplishment. We began laying the groundwork in 2023, submitted our application in late 2024, and successfully navigated a rigorous authorisation process that required us to redesign our operating model to meet the highest standards of compliance, governance, and security,” said Delia Paciagiu, Chief Operating Officer of NETOPIA Payments.
She added: „This licence is a testament to the robust, trusted, and highly compliant institution we have built at NETOPIA Payments. We have met the highest regulatory standards and are fully prepared to shape the future of payments. The authorisation process is complete. Now, the real work—and our next chapter—begins.”
