POS sharing in Romania: from a concept met with skepticism 10 years ago to €4.4bn in processed volume in 2025

27 ianuarie 2026

First launched by SIBS Romania a decade ago, the POS Sharing solution enables a single POS terminal to be used by multiple banks. Today, the system is used by 10 of Romania’s leading banks, through a network of tens of thousands of active terminals that process millions of transactions annually, worth €4.4bn in processed volume in 2025.

When SIBS ROMANIA launched POS Sharing, there was skepticism. Sharing infrastructure between banks was not the obvious path. It required trust, discipline and a long-term view.” – said Augustin Dobre, CEO of SIBS Romania.

Years later, the market answered.

He added: „For me, these numbers are not about scale alone. They are about choices. Banks choosing collaboration over fragmentation. Merchants choosing speed over complexity. An ecosystem choosing infrastructure that actually scales.

For Augustin Dobre, POS Sharing is no longer an innovation project. It is core payment infrastructure.

He said that the reality is simple:
– banks that integrate now gain relevance, efficiency and merchant loyalty.
– merchants that integrate now gain speed, perfoomance and cost optimisation
– cardholders gain relevance, ease of use and options.
Those who wait will eventually integrate — but from behind.” – he concluded.

According to data compiled by the National Bank of Romania, as of the end of the first half of 2025 there were 568,000 POS terminals in operation nationwide, nearly 99.5% of which supported contactless payments.
