Mollie, one of Europe’s fastest-growing payment service providers, is now a Principal Member of the European Payments Initiative and will offer Wero, its unified payment solution. „This development marks a significant milestone in the rollout of Wero and underscores Mollie’s commitment to enabling the next generation of pan-European payment experiences for merchants and consumers alike.” – according to the press release.
As a Principal Member, Mollie will play a central role in connecting merchants to the Wero payment network, enabling them to accept Wero transactions directly through Mollie’s platform.
Wero, developed and operated by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), is designed to harmonize digital payments across Europe through a real-time, account-to-account payment system. It also aims to gradually replace several national payment solutions – including the Netherlands’ iDEAL with a single, modern, and scalable infrastructure that benefits both businesses and consumers across the European Union.
„The adoption of Wero by Mollie is expected to significantly boost merchant acceptance of the new payment method. By integrating Wero into its suite of payment methods, Mollie will allow its vast merchant network to offer customers instant, secure and seamless payment experiences through Wero, alongside other popular options.” – the company said.
„Mollie’s participation as an EPI member reflects our long-term vision to support innovation in the payments landscape. We believe in a unified European payment ecosystem that empowers merchants of all sizes with choice, security and efficiency. This strengthens our commitment and helps accelerate the adoption of next-generation payments.” – said Koen Köppen, CEO of Mollie.
„With Mollie joining Wero, first in Germany and soon expanding to other European markets, we are reinforcing our ambition to offer a secure, sovereign and user-friendly mobile payment solution for both consumers and businesses in Europe. Together, we are helping European merchants growing with trusted and attractive payment services that strengthen our European sovereign economy.” – said Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI.
The transition to Wero is already underway in several markets, with Wero currently available for peer-to-peer payments in countries such as Belgium, France and Germany, and e-commerce acceptance being rolled out progressively.
For merchants using Mollie, enabling Wero payments will be straightforward via the existing Mollie dashboard, meaning businesses can adopt the new European standard with minimal technical overhead while unlocking new market opportunities and enhanced transaction efficiency.
Wero will be available for Mollie merchants in Germany and Belgium in the first half of 2026, with France and Luxembourg shortly after. In the Netherlands, migration from iDEAL to Wero will start late 2026, to be completed by the end of 2027, with a co-branded logo to be used in the interim.
