itsme®, the largest provider of mobile identification services in Belgium, acquires Dutch identification service iDIN

23 decembrie 2025

With this acquisition, itsme expands its service offering significantly in the Dutch private market.  This is the first itsme foreign acquisition since its inception in 2017. For Dutch consumers and business platforms such as online retailers, insurers and other connected organisations, this marks a shift to a broader European platform for secure online identification. From mid 2026, consumers will be able to use the itsme app alongside their bank app to identify themselves with iDIN. iDIN will remain available for at least two more years.

itsme has announced the acquisition of Dutch identification service iDIN. With it, the Belgian identification app reinforces its position as the European reference for digital identity. iDIN will eventually be merged into itsme, allowing Dutch citizens to use itsme in the future to identify themselves, log in, and verify their age. „With this acquisition, itsme is committing to international growth and confirms its ambition to become the standard for secure digital identification in Europe.” – according to the press release.

European standard

With the acquisition of iDIN, itsme reinforces and accelerates its position in the Dutch market. Mid-2026 all current iDIN users will have access to itsme, including new functionalities such as qualified electronic signatures. After recent expansions making itsme available in 30 countries, the Netherlands will now become the first country outside of Belgium where itsme will significantly expand its services.

Since 2021, itsme has grown to become the largest provider of mobile identification services in Belgium. To date, more than 80% of the adult population uses the identity app, accounting for more than 1 million actions daily. Over the past years, itsme not only expanded its services but also its client portfolio. Currently, itsme has collaborations with more than 1200 companies in different industries.

Tom Van Den Bosch, CEO of itsme: “With the acquisition of iDIN we are reinforcing our position as the European standard for a safe, digital identity and are accelerating our presence in the Dutch market. iDIN is a trusted name, and by joining forces we are preparing for the future with one solution that combines ease of use with the highest international security standards. This way, we connect not only our countries, but we are also shaping a future in which trust has no boundaries.”

Integration of itsme® in the Netherlands

iDIN is an initiative by Currence, a collaboration between the major Dutch banks. It allows people in the Netherlands to identify themselves securely through their bank app when using online platforms from retailers, insurers and other digital services. In total, iDIN services roughly 300 local websites that are linked to the private market.

For consumers using iDIN there will not be any immediate changes. The transition from iDIN to itsme will commence after the terms agreed between both parties have been met in the first half of 2026 and will likely be finalized in 2028. The itsme-app is already broadly available in the Netherlands and can easily be installed with a Dutch identity document.

Daniel van Delft, CEO Currence: “With iDIN, the banks have offered a secure and trusted way of digital identification for the past ten years. Now the banks are taking the next step. itsme has a strong track record, meets all regulatory requirements and has a clear focus on innovation, which makes it the ideal party to prepare iDIN for the future.”
