Romanians’ travel worst financial nightmare is overspending not physical theft

28 iulie 2025

A recent survey carried out by Revolut on a representative sample of the Romanian population* highlights that the biggest financial worry for Romanians when traveling abroad is the struggle of budgeting and the temptation of overspending (22%), followed by the nightmare of physical theft (16%) and the unexpected expenses (12%).

Though 26% of the respondents admit that they always stick to the holiday budget, 24% of the participants say that the unexpected spending is the main reason for overspending. The second reason for not staying within the budget is the desire to live in the moment (20%) and the impulsive buying (8%). 44% of the respondents usually save money in a special fund to finance their vacation, and 26% say they don’t save, just pay from their ordinary funds.

The dread of physical theft, particularly the loss of a wallet or purse containing cards, cash, ID documents or even worse, their phone, is another concern for Romanian travelers (16%). This isn’t just about losing money; it’s about the immediate and overwhelming feeling of being stranded in an unfamiliar place, unable to pay for essentials and with the subsequent scramble to cancel cards, replace documents, that can consume precious holiday time.

GenZers (18-24 year olds) in Romania are more concerned about physical theft while travelling (18%), as well as the seniors (65+) with 21%. This suggests a potential generational divide in travel-related financial anxieties. At 9% each, the most common worries are the anxiety of fraud, scams, or unauthorized charges
ruining their trip, and the travel insurance not paying out for a medical incident.

While scams worry Romanians aged 35-44 the most (11%), the fear of exceeding the budget is what mainly worries GenZ, indicated by 17% of this generation.

Four Romanians out of ten declare that they would never overspend or go on debt for the sake of a holiday, while 22% admit that they avoided this at the last minute. The younger generations (Gen Z – 33%) are most open to spending their money for a vacation that they would not normally afford and considered it a worthy choice. The same generation also has the higher percentage of respondents who regretted having overspent on holidays (9% vs 6% the average). On the other hand, 6 out 10 respondents over 55 y.o. replied that they would never overspend for the sake of a holiday.
